Sunshine Daydream

It started with an idea for a fun little stop motion video of Dancing (Marching) bears and it lead to something more.  A show that could have changed the course of history in the town I call home before mother nature got in the way, leaving an opportunity for you and your friends to step in and create something legendary.

Sending this knowing that the chances this idea gets considered are slim, but like so many other ideas I've never shared there is only one way to find out :)

The Grateful Dead were scheduled to perform at Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on March 24, 1968. The concert was organized by the church's Tower Club, aiming to bridge generational gaps by introducing the congregation to contemporary youth culture. Despite initial reservations, the church's Adult Education Committee approved the event, viewing it as an opportunity to understand the emerging "hippie" movement.

However, the concert was ultimately canceled due to a severe snowstorm that made travel unsafe. The Grateful Dead, having performed in Detroit just prior, were unable to make the journey to Grand Rapids. Consequently, the band returned to San Francisco, leaving behind only promotional materials as evidence of the planned event.

One notable artifact from this canceled show is a handbill featuring band member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan depicted with angel wings. This design, created by artist Jim Carrico, has become a sought-after collector's item, with original prints fetching significant sums at auction, or so I've read.

In summary, while the Grateful Dead never performed at Fountain Street Church, the planned 1968 concert remains a memorable "what could have been" moment in the band's history and the cultural tapestry of Grand Rapids.

I recently acquired a limited reprint of the poster because the art was inspiring and it was worth the small amount of money to add the poster to my collection of posters for shows that never took place.  The other two are from the covid cancelled New Years shows at 20 Monroe which I had once thought would be my first live bluegrass experience.  The way of the world and her master plan had a different future in store, but I'm happy it did because it lead me to here.

An idea that I would post about if I didn't think doing so might make it never be considered.  So instead I'm sharing with you first.  Maybe 2026, even 2027, after 2 nights potentially at the new amphitheater, you could make this sneaky show happen, maybe even dust of Jack's electric guitar (or invite him to join) along with any of your many friends that enjoy playing Dead jams.

I get it, playing the Dead and hearing people call for it gets old... especially with so many originals and covers that you could play instead.  But this idea would offer up the chance to play GD songs with a specific intent that would no doubt be a legendary show.  Obviously $2 tickets aren't going to fly, but whatever the price I am sure you could make it work financially by filming it and even recording it as a potential album release someday.

Again, this is all just a dream but I'd love to help make it happen and be involved in any capacity I could.
